In line with the other sections, Rainbows have undergone an extensive review in order to ensure that we are providing an exciting, challenging, relevant and up-to-date programme. This is reflected in our eye-catching new logo.

The Five Essentials

Rainbows work together in small groups

Rainbows are encouraged to govern themselves and make their own decisions

Rainbows have a balanced and varied programme

Rainbows care for the individual

Rainbows share a commitment to a common standard

Opportunities should be given to the girl to work in different groups, such as peer groups, friendship groups and as a unit. Rainbows already make decisions in a variety of ways such as Rainbow Chat, choice of games and songs, and are capable of much more. Rainbows have always experienced an exciting and varied programme but leaders expressed a desire for more structure. As always, Rainbows are encouraged to care for themselves, their leaders and others. In keeping with other sections, it was felt that Rainbows were able to commit fully to the Promise

The Rainbow Promise

I promise that I will do my best to love my God and to be kind and helpful

The Rainbows today have much more understanding of the concept of a Promise than the first Rainbows in 1987.  The new metal badge brings the Rainbow fully in line with the rest of the guiding family.

The Rainbow Welcome Bag

This is given to a new Rainbow at her first or second meeting. The Guider can give it to the Rainbow containing any information she feels necessary. The bag is made from durable red plastic with glow-in-the- dark blue piping and a blue carry handle. This size is just right for a Rainbow’s

Ready for Rainbows book.

When a girl joins Rainbows she receives Ready for Rainbows, which introduces her to lots of pre-Promise activities. The book uses relevant language and pictures for the age group and is in full colour. As before, a Rainbow will make her Promise when she feels happy and ready to do so. This will be at a party that she has planned and is to be celebrated with the whole unit. The party should not be a financial burden on the unit. It can be as simple as choosing her party guests or singing her favourite song. Ready for Rainbows also introduces the girl to a special new friend…

Olivia!

Olivia and her friends move with the girl throughout her time in Rainbows. A Rainbow will read the first part of Olivia’s story in Ready for Rainbows as they both prepare to make their Promise. Olivia is timeless and ageless and will share the same experiences as the Rainbow through various resources. Olivia’s name was chosen as a tribute to Lady Olave Baden-Powell.
